Stay tuned - May starts our birthdays... we have a first, fourth, and thirty third birthday coming up!
WOW
April 21, 2010 Where is J & J ??
So what's new with the boys you ask? Jacob is busy wrapping up his school year. We're down to 4 more weeks. It feels like yesterday that Achen and I were worrying about how to get him excited to go to school. Now he asks us daily do I have school today? Luckily next year, he will have school everyday! As for Joshua, he has mastered crawling, expresses himself with loud coos, can identify Jesus, his toys. He says da da da... I wonder what achen has done to him...LOL He has begun pulling himself up and is cruising around looking for trouble. Of course, he follows in big brother's footsteps and loves finding random things and putting it in his mouth! He is on tooth 6 and counting...He's making an earnest effort to balance for a few seconds.
So of course, most people that know Jacob knows that he spends his days dressed in his kupayum and doing Qurbana. well a few weeks back when Achen was out... I found an amazing scene... Jacob was dressed up, had the censor and was singing nin mathav at which time Joshua had found his brother's church bell and was ringing it in psych with his singing. Very beautiful! I just hope they continue with this love for church and God! Hopefully in the future there won't be any arguments on who the officiating clergy is! =)
April 4, 2010 Hoppy Easter!
After 50 days of lent and Holy Week Services we were eagerly awaiting Easter. We had a wonderful service and afterwards the children had an egg hunt. Jacob walked away with 7 eggs! Lucky 7... Joshua watched the festivities through the window as the spring allergies started up and kept mommy inside... The day was beautiful! In the evening, we got to celebrate Winder Appachan and Ammachi's 35th wedding anniversary! Wishing them many, more happy years to come.**Note** - we can't mention Holy Week 2010 without THANKING Wilson Uncle, Ancy Aunty, Jan Chachen, Preethi Chachy, and Devya Chachy... for their warm hospitality and love. This was the first time we spent the whole week in Charlotte. They took such good care of us during the week. Ancy aunty is responsible for the extra pounds Achen and I came home with on Easter (breakfast, lunch, tea & snacks, dinner.... gracious) Words can't express our gratitude. May God bless you!
March 22, 2010 Aunty is out for knee surgery... what will we do?
We were very worried about what to do with the kids while Aunty was away. Fortunately Rutha chachy came to the rescue. The boys and chachy have been enjoying their days of playing together...we're so grateful she was able to volunteer to come help us out during this time. God sent! We're wishing Aunty a speedy recovery!March 17, 2010 The little Leprechaun comes to Lord of Life
Jacob was so excited when we picked him up from car pool. Apparently the Leprechaun had come to their class while they were at music class. He left green pee in their toilet, green footprints on the window, made a mess in their class room. They didn't have a net so they couldn't catch him. He even left them gold coins, a letter, and a picture saying he missed them. Jacob came home wondering if the little one might come visit the house... uh oh... now all the messes we find will be blamed on the Leprechaun!March 1, 2010 Thank you God for my Boys!
My boys suprised me with a wonderful birthday! Daddy took me out to breakfast, a movie, lunch! He went all out! =) Then the afternoon and evening the 4 of us spent together, just enjoying each other's company. My little ones got me a very cute chocolate birthday cake. I had to break lent for one bite (didn't want to hurt their feelings) but it was great! Another year has passed and many many blessings! Thank you Lord!January 29, 2010 Biji coming to town for Pajama Day?
Biji came down to visit and turns out Ms. Shefali welcomed us to read to the class. It was pajama day at school so the class was dressed in their PJs and enjoying a fun day with the letter P! They had pink pancakes, popsicles, and a pizza party. Biji read a couple of books to the class while they enjoyed their lunch. Jacob was surprised! Joy chachen came on Saturday. Quick visit! The made their purchase and off they went! Although it was short, we were glad they could come down!January 2010 - What’s new with Jacob & Joshua
Happy New Year!We are seeing the beginnings of a tooth, little Joshua is gnawing on fingers, teething toys, or whatever he can get his hands on. His favorite game is peek-a-boo. His brother keeps him occupied with Aunty during the day while dad and mom are at work. Lots of brotherly love, sometimes too much?! Occasionally Joshua will get a BIG BEAR hug from Achacha to which he will respond with a coo then a cry to free him. Joshua is sitting on his own and enjoying a LITTLE bit of independence. We are not allowed to stray too far ... he will definitely let us know that he dislikes total independence. He’s trying out words like a-cha-cha, ba ba ba, da da… apparently M's are further down the alphabet so mommy has to wait a bit longer for her syllables. Jacob is enjoying school and had his first snow day on Friday. We took him to NY thinking he would get to experience the winter, who knew it would follow us back home! Temperatures in the teens, snow, ice … oh my…
December 25 - January 2 Holidays spent in the Big Apple!
Fortunately the days off played out to where we had a quiet and enjoyable week in New York. Jacob and Joshua were spoiled by New York Appachan, Ammachi, Joy chachen and Biji chachy. We braved the frigid temperatures and went to the city to catch a Gazzilion Bubbles in New York city. We all enjoyed the last 10 minutes of the show where the theater filled with a GAZZILION bubbles! Even Joshua was mesmerized. Who knew bubbles would have that affect! We headed back to Charlotte for the Christmas New Year program. It was a hit!November 26, 2009 Joshua's First Thanksgiving
We were able to stay in town for Thanksgiving this year so we went to Winder Appachan and Ammachi's house for turkey spectacular. It was delicious as usual! Everyone left stuffed! Also had some quality time with family! We even caught Appachan, Jacob, and Joshua watching the Macy's parade! Joel and Ancy had some good news to share... We have a new family member on the way! Jacob and Joshua will have a baby cousin in a few months...September 5 - 23, 2009 Daddy's away and the babies play =)
Achen had to head to India a month earlier than planned so we had to figure out how to manage without him for a few weeks. Although I was apprehensive, we made it through OK! They say distance makes the heart grow fonder...In order to help Jacob conceptualize daddy being away we had a calendar on the fridge that marked the countdown. We had moments of drama (Jacob missing daddy) but it was all good! Got through it in one piece. Thank God! =) Jacob even went on to say that he really likes school and it is a lot of fun (music class, chapel, mystery readers, etc)! So what did Joshua do you might ask... he learned a few new tricks... most evenings his big brother had him laughing. It was precious! He is about half way over on his mission to turn from front to back. He's swimming when he's tummy timing! I can't believe the transformation in just a few weeks! Hurry home daddy!September 4, 2009 Bittersweet...a day that won't be forgotten...
Achen marked his 5th ordination anniversary and sadly by noon we came to know Appachan passed away. The Patriarch of the Kulathinkarote family left his place on Earth to join our heavenly father! We have such fond memories of Appachan and will cherish those thoughts of him for years to come. His devotion to church and prayerful life resulted in having a very blessed life. We will miss him dearly... When Achen arrived in Kerala, he went to Appachen and Ammachi's room and opened the bible.. Here is a passage that Achen received...Genesis 15:15 ~You will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.~
September 1, 2009 Jacob's first day of pre-school
We have say the baby steps throughout the summer and the psyching up of school definitely helped Jacob. He was a very brave boy the first day of school. He walked in with a smile. His teacher sent a very sweet note to let us know what a great job Jacob did! Here is an excerpt: "Jabob had a FABULOUS first day at school. He fell right into the school routine the minute he walked into the classroom and was my big helper this morning. He had no tears (and I mean NONE at all!) and was very happy in school. Everyone was pleasantly surprised to see this big change from summer camp. I am very proud of him and I know he will do just fine in school this year."
Thanks Ms. Shefali & Ms. Jami for keep Jacob engaged and excited while he is in school!
August 8 - 14, 2009 Joshua's first road trip!
We decided to make a trip to Charlotte and New York with Joshua! We had service in Charlotte on Sunday and headed up to the BIG APPLE! Luckily Joshua did great for his first trip (Chachen helped with Joshua through out the trip... singing songs and making sure our little one was OK!). I am presuming this will be one of many many road trips! Jacob was reluctant to get in the pool but we did our best to get him soaked! We had a restful week in NY - well deserved vacation.July 2009 Adjusting to life with 2...
We have always heard that you don't have children until you have 2... isn't that the truth. It had been quite an interesting experience with a newborn and 3 year old. Makes us appreciate our parents A LOT MORE! Learning to juggle 2 kids, Charlotte trips, and attempt to keep things semi-sane is quite the challenge. It's all good! Although it is extremely tiresome at times, it is dDefinitely rewarding! =)June - 23 - 25, July 2 - 5, & July 14 - 16, 2009 Jacob goes to Camp/Family Conference
In an effort to get Jacob prepared for starting school in September, we decided to take baby steps by having him go to camp and the family conference. The first day of camp he did phenomenal - we feel we jinxed ourselves because soon after he became real sad when it was time to go to camp. We got through it though... The family conference was an experience for him as well. He got to go to Pittsburgh with daddy on a plane and ended up spending most of his time with Joy chachen and Biji chachy.June 2009 - Brotherly love or ?!
So you may ask, how is big brother adapting to sharing the spotlight. Jacob has adapted to his new role "CHACHEN" very well. He adores Joshua and wants to see him all the time. Before he goes anywhere he comes and kisses him and tells him he will miss him so much and that he loves him. For the most part, Jacob is a huge help for mommy. He grabs the diapers and wipes and clothes etc. Loves to be a BIG helper. He wants to hold Joshua all the time so if he is on his best behavior we will let him hold him for a few minutes at a time. He just doesn't realize of course that he has to be gentle so we have to watch at all times. Joshua seems to enjoy his brother's company. He stares at him when he is holding him and gives him grins. I bet they are up to something...Hopefully they will continue to share that brotherly love. I am sure it will be more fun for both when Joshua is older and is more mobile. Scary for mom and dad though as we will have 2 little men to follow after... all part of the parenting fun!
June 10, 2009 - Big Brother turns 3!
For Jacob's third birthday, mommy and Joshua were homebound. So Jacob and Daddy had a boy’s day out. They started off the day with the Children's museum, and then headed to Cabernet for “Kala” and a yummy chocolate cake. Luckily mommy was able to break away for an hour to enjoy Jacob’s birthday lunch! Afterwards it was time to play at Chuck E. Cheese. Jacob enjoyed his birthday. On Saturday, daddy made Jacob’s favorite BBQ on the grill and we got a cake from Carvel, (cake, cones, ice cream and cherries – oh my). Jacob said he had a fun 2 days celebrating his birthday. He already asked when we get to do it all over again! Hmmm – he doesn’t quite understand the concept of time yet. Next year my dear…June 6, 2009 - NY Appachan's 60th birthday bash!
Jacob and Daddy flew to New York to spend the weekend with NY appachan as he celebrated his 60th birthday. Jacob rode a plane for the first time that he would be able to remember. He and daddy read books, colored, and had snacks on the flight. The weekend was spent eating red aluva and korrul appum. Jacob got to visit the pet store. Ruth Chris Steakhouse for dinner - Mommy and Joshua missed out!May, 2009 - Joshua is born
Janice, Jacob & I are excited to announce the birth of Joshua K. Mathew (6 Pounds 19 Inches) on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Both baby and mom are doing well. Please remember us in your prayers.March - May, 2009 - What will daddy and Jacob do?
We were all a little apprehensive on how things were going to pan out with mommy on bed rest... It was time for the boys to take charge and BOY DID THEY! Daddy was starting to become a culinary expert and of course Jacob was his helper! Also with the help of friends and family we were getting by week to week (food, magazines, Janice sitters - lol). Fortunately aunty was here during the day to watch Jacob and the evenings Janice would spend some time reading to Jacob. They enjoyed their mommy Jacob moments. On the days of mommy's doctor appointment she would come down the stairs - we knew she was surveying the first floor. I am sure she had a lot to say but kept it to herself. The weekends were the boys' trips to Charlotte. Jacob loved spending one on one time with daddy. Daddy loved it too since Jacob has become a conversationalist. He had company on their 4 hour drive there and back (between serious and silly talks, music, and DD stops). 10 weeks down a couple more to go - soon we will have our long awaited Mathew addition.March 1, 2009 - Janice turns XX?!
I guess we shouldn't publish her age but I am sure most can figure it out. Fortunately the doctor Okayed Janice to go to church on her birthday. We had a nice lunch and cupcakes for everyone at church in Winder. Believe it or not God presented Janice with snow on her birthday so even though she was a bit preoccupied she had an unexpected White Birthday which made her smile! Competitive siblings already - Jacob took mommy out on bed rest on Mother's day (May) and Joshua beat him by putting her out on her birthday (March). Should be interesting... So began her journey of bed rest...February, 2009 - The calm before the storm
We had our regular schedule of work, Jacob's day's spent with Aunty and Charlotte on the weekends. Unfortunately things came to a dramatic halt on the 26th when Janice started to not feel well. As we thought about it, we were guessing Jacob's little brother thought we were having too much fun out here and wanted to make an early appearance. After a doctor's visit and a couple of tests, we realized the seriousness of the matter. Janice would be put on bed rest from here on out. We were at week 24 and a few days.January 30, 2009 - Jacob update
Jacob spends his days asking to be an Achen or Thirumeni. He is obsessed with Achen's kappas and holy books. He loves to act like he is doing Qurbana. Sometimes Achen or I get to play the role of altar assistant. It's amazing to see how much he absorbs. He is certainly a sponge! He picks up all sort of things! He loves to read books and play with his blocks. He talks to the baby daily. I think he is looking forward to being a big brother! Hopefully he continues to keep God in the center of his life. We will hope and pray!January 26, 2009 - It's a BOY!
Janice had her 20 week ultrasound. Jacob was allowed in too! He got to see the baby on the monitor. He listened intently to the heart beating and watched the little feet kicking. The sonographer asked Jacob if he thought it was a brother or sister and he replied it is a brother. She looked over and said you know what you are RIGHT! Jacob is having a brother! He is ready to play ball with the baby. Not sure he will be patient enough for that day to come...January 24 - 27, 2009 - Joy and Biji in Alpharetta
Saturday morning Joy and Biji came to Atlanta. We hung out at home and headed up to Charlotte. It was a fun couple of days of dining out, birthday desserts and best of all Jacob's first trip to the Aquarium. We are still debating on whether Joy chachen or Jacob had more fun. He loved seeing all the fish - although he was afraid they might bite him like the whale in Jonah (I guess it's hard to understand that a whale would swallow a man). Jacob had a really good time since Joy and Biji devoted the whole time to Jacob. He loves attention and they gave it to him! Between Jacob's qurbana's, toys, book - they were busy!January 1, 2009 - Happy New Year!
Exhausted from our trips and cleaning house - We had a low key New Year's! We went to Qurbana in Winder. We went over to Monisha chachi's house for dinner and headed home. It was nice to take a break and just have some quality time at home.December 26 - 29, 2008 - Jacob's first Houston trip
Jacob got the opportunity to hang out with Justin chachen, Joshua chachen, Jose appachan and Latha Ammachi. Although it was only a couple of days Jacob was influenced by the elder brothers. They would teach him all sorts of things... I think their goal was to drive us crazy!December 2008 - Christmas at a glance
Between grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and church family Jacob got a lot of gifts this year. Luckily for dad and mom it was a gift year off! Jacob did see Santa at the mall a couple of times but was not ready to sit on Santa's lap. He enjoyed a weekend of Christmas caroling in Atlanta with the Charlotte church. The month was very busy with Church activities. Jacob got to help decorate the tree. He put up an ornament with his name and of course the start at the very top (daddy gave him a hoist to the top). Christmas was spent in Charlotte and driving to Houston.November 14 - 22, 2008 New York
We decided to surprise Papa and Mommy after their trip to India. We spent the week with them. We took Jacob to Chuck E. Cheese which he enjoyed. He ended up getting a basketball with all the tickets he won (ok maybe he didn't get all those tickets on his own - daddy and Joy chachen helped!).October 4, 2008 - Charlotte Church Picnic
Jacob was excited about being outside all day long. He particpated in the candy picking, relay races and loved hanging out with all the kids. He's got a lot of people that love him so he is blessed everywhere he goes. Probably one of the most traveled tots!October 3, 2008 - We're expecting!
We found out we're having another baby. We knew it was early but we went ahead and shared the news with Jacob first! Although he didn't quite understand how this was suppose to pan out he was thoroughly excited. His prayers had been answered that's all that mattered. Later Aruna told us she and Jacob would pray every morning for a brother or sister.September 21 - 27, 2008 - Trip to NY
We made a visit to New York to attend the elevation cermemony of Varkey Achen. We got to spend the week chilling at home! A trip to the Aramana, the pet store, and feeding the birds were some of Jacob's favorites along of course spending time with his grandparents and Joy and Biji. Saturday we were in Philly for the elevation ceremony and we rushed out to be in Charlotte in time for QUrbana on Sunday!August 23 - 29, 2008 - Here we come Washington D.C.!!
We got to spend the week in Washington D.C. Saturday, Papa, Mommy, Joy, and Biji met up with us in D.C. We got to go to church on Sunday Morning for St. Mary's perunal. Jacob was especially happy since Theethose Thirumeni was doing Qurbana. Afterwards we took Thirumeni and Dileesh Achen around the sites of D.C. Jacob had a blast. Jacob was sad to see thirumeni, Papa, mommy, Joy and Biji leave. During the week we hung out and the evenings were spent enjoying D.C. It was a great trip. We all enjoyed it.June 20, 2008 - Where is Jacob now?
So what's Jacob up to you ask? He's definitely the conversationalist. Mommy what's this? Daddy what's that? What's wrronng with you, fill in the name? (when someone gets on his nerves). He's very curious about everything. He loves to read, sing songs and even dresses up with a hat, belt, and mommy's sandals to do Qurbana. He enjoys being outdoors and going places. Daddy went out and got him a basketball goal so I am sure the 2 of them will have a blast with that. Now don't think that everything is perfect ALWAYS! Jacob's got his moments of frustration and fury but it's all part of the growing pains! Janice and I can't believe we have a toddler. Boy has the time gone by quickly... this is probably why we are constantly told by other parents to enjoy every minute (soon we'll be sending him off to Kindergarten...ahhh). As difficult and stressful as life may be we both make an earnest effort to enjoy Jacob! He truly is a gift from God!June 18, 2008 - Dr. Penny?!
No worries! It was just Jacob's 2 year checkup. At 26 pounds and 36 inches our little baby has become a toddler. All's good from Dr. Penny – Jacob is doing well, good bill of health! If all's well he can come back at age 3. We will strive for that...June 8 - 16, 2008 - New York - here we come!
After service on Sunday we headed up to New York. Thankfully we rented a van so Janice and Jacob could try to enjoy the 14 hour ride. We got to New York in good time believe it or not. Monday was spent chilling at home. Monday evening we went to the Varkey's resort! BBQ overlooking the pool what more could you ask for... Jacob got his first exposure to the pool! HE LOVED IT! He got to lie in the hammock and even ate a hot dog! Then of course the highlight of the evening was Theethose Thirumeni joining us. He tried to charm Thirumeni with all of his Qurbana songs and "Ninne Varthum Njan" (his word for censer - dhoopa kuttee). We tried to get him winded down for the big day but we think the little guy knew June 10th was coming. We decided that we want to do something special for Jacob's birthday. So with Thirumeni's gracious acceptance we had Qurbana at the Aramana first thing in the morning. The 10 of us celebrated Jacob's 2nd birthday by having him cut a cake with ELMO. Between Qurbana and Elmo, Jacob was on cloud 9! We had a light breakfast and then Thirumeni showed Jacob his pool. Seeing wasn't enough, he was eager to jump on in...with the help of Thirumeni and Joy chachen of course! We had lunch at an Italian restaurant - can't remember the name (Joy and Biji can fill in the gaps) - Mama Mia was delicious according to Janice! The evening was spent just hanging out with the birthday boy... bubbles, clothes, toys - Jacob's 2nd birthday was memorable! Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Jacob spent time with Appachan, Ammachi, Joy and Biji outside playing in the sprinklers, visiting the neighbors, watching nature do it's thing...squirrels, dogs, and bird... Oh My.... Saturday morning we hung out with the cousins at Memorial Park - playground, bball, tennis, pizza, and ICECREAM! The weekend was busy with Jijo and Sheena's wedding festivities. Jacob slept during most of the wedding but was wide awake and energized for the reception. He enjoyed the appetizers by the fountain and even ventured out to the dance floor during the night! Hmmm Janice and I need to keep an eye on him...
The week came to a close bright and early Monday morning when we headed back on our way...May 26, 2008 - Happy 6th Anniversary Dad and Mom....We're off to the Zoo!
Jacob took his first trip to the Zoo. Actually, I take that back, with the exception of Janice it was all of our first trip. Monisha and Renie joined us on our adventure. According to Jacob the Elephant has a BIG trunk, floppy ears and big feet, the giraffe has a looonnnggg neck, and the baby panda fell down while trying to get on it's hammock (some of that is a repeat from his At the Zoo - Elmo book). He recognized most of the animals . He is constantly telling us about his trip so we know he thoroughly enjoyed it. All in all it was a awesome day. Hmmm what a way to spend our 6th wedding anniversary! In all seriousness, Janice and I had a blast and the expressions on Jacob's face was better than any gift we could have received!April 15 - June 1, 2008 - Aunty Away for Ketak's Wedding!
We had an extremely tough time getting help while Aunty was away. Plans A - X failed and even backfired on us. Finally with the help of our parents and especially Monisha, we got through the month without major issues! Jacob loved spending time with everyone. He had a blast and even picked up a few new phrases!March 16 - 23, 2008 - Holy Week 2008
The majority of the week was spent in Charlotte. Although Jacob would get impatient and fidgety at times overall from what we could tell Jacob enjoyed the Holy Week services. Although Janice would try to keep him from distracting everyone her efforts failed! He would entertain the congregation by singing Natha thay stutheeyum loud, kissing Golgultha (constantly), and kneeling at designated times. On our way home, Jacob would sing Peeda... so apparently he had a good week. Hopefully as he gets older he will appreciate the meaning of the Holy Week!February 16 - 18, 2008 - SURPRISE from New York!
We were carrying on our usual weekend at home schedule of laundry and cleaning when around 6PM the doorbell rang. We weren't expecting anyone and we rarely have guests since most weekends are in Charlotte. To our shock Papa, Mommy, Joy, and Biji were at the door. They drove 12 hours to spend the long weekend with Jacob! We chilled at home and enjoyed one another's company. Of course Jacob wowed everyone with his skills! The weekend went by quick but boy was it a nice surprise!January 29, 2008 - What's NEW with Jacob!
Hmmm where do we begin...? Jacob is a lot more verbal now. He talks, screams (when he doesn't get his way), sings (nursery rhymes, church songs, prayer songs, and even a gujurathi song), says mini sentences. He likes to imitate our conversations. He is climbing on to everything from the highchair to the kitchen table... anything he can hoist himself up on. He helps mommy put the clothes in the dryer, tries to put his laundry clothes in HIS laundry basket. He enjoys leaving his toys all over the family room floor and has trouble sometimes cleaning up in the evenings. He enjoys going to church and receiving "Jesus appum". He loves to point out everything he knows the name of... I guess he is proud of himself and his new vocabulary! He does get time outs on occasion for not listening and misbehaving! Overall it is a fun time of learning and new experiences. According to Jacob, Daddy and Mommy just need to build PATIENCE. Another life lesson... We are definitely working on it. At times it is trying but we will get through it... all a part of parenting. No matter...good or bad... WE ARE LOVING IT!January 2 - 17, 2008 - Daddy is off to India...ALONE!
Janice and Jacob dropped me, pappa, and mommy off at the airport. I think everyone was a little heartbroken. This was the first time I was traveling for a long period of time (15 days), international, ALONE without Janice and Jacob! I was hoping they would be ok. Fortunately Bincy from church came over for a couple of days. Mommy (Janice's mom) came over a few days and the rest they were able to manage on their own. My trip was good once I got over the exhaustion of travel. I was able to visit a lot of my family and spend quality time with Appachan and Ammachi. I was very pleased to see that Appachan and Ammachi were managing well. They are comfortable for the most part. A little sadness lingers that none of the children are close by. What to do... How did Janice and Jacob do? Well according to Janice... Jacob had some moments but they made it through. According to Jacob, he thought he was the man of the house since daddy was away and took control. He's not sure how mommy took his new role (apparently she was not too happy with him being boss)! It was a good chance for both Janice and I to realize that we are glad to have one another to share our troubles and triumphs. It was hard communicating our daily activities with the time change and so forth. Good life lessons!January 1, 2008 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We actually had a very quiet, simple New Year's Eve. We awoke at the stroke of midnight from the sounds of firecrackers at our neighbors house. We prayed together and then fell back to sleep. We had Qurbana in the morning and hung out at home. Achen was heading out to Kerala the next day so had plenty of packing to do. Our hope for the new year is to be happy, healthy, and blessed! We are approaching the terrible twos in the coming year and pray that God will keep us SANE and give us the guidance to rear a responsible, loving, little person! Only time will tell!December 24, 2007 - Christmas in Charlotte
On the ride up to Charlotte, we stopped at the Charlotte international airport to pick up Appachan and Ammachi who were visiting from New York. Then off we went to church for evening prayer. Christmas morning we headed off to church. Afterwards we headed back home shortly to open presents. Jacob got clothes, books, toys from Charlotte, Atlanta, and New York... luckily little boy! Then headed to Appachan and Ammachi's house in Smyrna for a bit before Christmas dinner. Jacob had a blast with the little cousins at Shaji Uncle's house. Only to be beat and fall asleep on the ride home... MERRY CHRISTMAS JACOB!December 10, 2007 - Jacob's 18th month appointment
We actually sang happy 18th month birthday to Jacob as we headed to Dr. Penny's office. Jacob was happy to see Doctor Penny. He even made that comment that most 18th month olds would not hold still for him to look in their ears and mouth. He got through the physical with flying colors. Then it was time for the not so fun part of the visit...SHOTS! Jacob whimpered a little but stayed strong. Afterwards he got a BIG HUG from dad and mom so he got over it quick! If all goes well, we don't have to come back until June for our 24 month appointment. Let's keep our fingers crossed!November 18, 2007 - Road trip to New York
After service at Charlotte on Sunday, we drove up to New York. Fortunately with one or two exceptions, Jacob was very well behaved. He enjoyed the Christian music, his toys, and books on the ride up. We got home around 11:30 PM. Jacob enjoyed a few days with Appachan and Ammachi. Joy chachen and Biji chechy came over to hang out. Thursday was Jacob's second Thanksgiving which we celebrated with Joy's family. Friday we hit the malls for some Black Friday shopping deals. Saturday was Jijo & Sheena's engagement. We got to spend some time with our extended family. Sunday, we attended service. After church we attempted to head home. Unfortunately everyone was on the roadways on Sunday so around 9PM we had to call it quits and stayed at a hotel. We got home Monday around noon or so. Overall it was a good trip...just tired from the return ride home. Back to work...November 5, 2007 - Jacob's Status
Many of you might be wondering what Jacob is up too these days... He is singing away... Among his top 10 - Baa Baa Black Sheep, Twinkle Twinkle, The Alphabet Song, Itsy Bitsy, and 5 Little Monkey's Jumping on the Bed. He loves when Janice and I sing along... He enjoys looking at pictures of family members, thirumenis and the Saints. His favorite reading materials you ask... His Bible, Curious George's Adventures, I Spy Books, and occasionally Clifford - I just got him 25 more books. He will be busy for a while... He is definitely more adventurous - trying to climb on the kitchen table using the chairs as ladders, loves to help mommy cook by banging the pots and pans, and watches football games with daddy. Every now and then you can catch Jacob watching Surya (Indian TV) and dancing to the commercials. He has had his share of time outs. Janice and I are trying to avoid addi's unless he does something really bad. Of course he knows when he has done something wrong and will throw us the puppy dog face or try to kiss and hug us so we can forget what he did. It is definitely hard being strict with this little guy. You know who is boss at the Mathew residence. He has definitely got us wrapped around his fingers. At the end of the day, we're always happy to see Jacob's progress (can't believe how much he has grown) and are so grateful to God that he is a part of our life!September 22 - October 10, 2007 - Aruna away... Jacob spoiled!
Aruna had to make a trip to Bombay for her oldest son's engagement so we had to find an alternative for Jacob since Janice and I had limited time off.
Week 1 & 2: Jacob enjoyed the company of ATL Ammachi
Week 3: Biji chechy came to play with a weekend visit from Joy chachen
Week 4 & 5: Jacob hung out with NY Appachan with a weekend visit from Ammachi
So after 5 weeks of being spoiled, we were worried for Aruna when she got back. Of course, when Aruna "Aunty" got back, Jacob was very excited to see her. She even brought back sweets and outfit for Jacob. He told Aunty he missed her. She was very happy to see him.September 10, 2007 - Jacob's fifteen month appointment 15 months... I can't believe it. Both Janice and I will try to hold our little bundle of joy and realize he is no longer little and wants to be held. He's mastering his walking skills. We were off to Dr. Penny's office for another visit. All looks good... Jacob continues on the growth chart at a normal pace, meets all his milestones, and gets his shots (OUCH!). As long as there are no illnesses we're set to come back in 18 months.
July 1, 2007 - Celebrate Someone's 30th Birthday
Janice and Jacob threw me a surprise party at church with cake, balloons, and my favorite PIZZA. We had a lot of fun and I was glad Papa and Mommy were here from New York to share in this special occasion.June 20, 2007 - Jacob's takes his first steps
We have good news! Jacob took his first few steps this evening. Luckily daddy, mommy, and Renie Chechy witnessed the great accomplishment. Jacob was extremely pleased with his new found talent. Once he received our praises he being excited took more steps and plopped down to clap. Now our worries begin... walking, running, chasing.... All part of growing up! Also, for those that are asking... is he talking yet... Jacob says a few words like da da, ma ma, dog, up, down, two, three, red, blue. He has a toy that sings the abc and 123. He will turn that on and try to sing along...June 10, 2007 - Jacob's First Birthday!
Wow can you believe it? Jacob is one year old !!!! We cannot believe how quickly the year has gone by. We are very grateful to God for blessing us with Jacob and giving us much happiness in the last year. As part of the birthday celebrations, on Saturday we had a prayer meeting / house dedication. Then on Sunday we had Qurbana in the morning at St. Mary's, Winder conducted by Theethose Thirumeni. We had Papa, Mommy, Joy, and Biji visiting from New York. We also had several families come from Charlotte. Afterwards we had a Winnie the Pooh theme birthday party for Jacob including cake, a smash cake, and goodie bags. Jacob seemed to be having a good time until it was time to cut the cake. All the little kids began to blow their horns/noisemakers and frightened him so he started to cry a bit. As soon as we got through that he was fine. Hopefully for his next birthday he can help us plan out the party!May 17 - June 7, 2007 - India/Dubai Trip
Jacob's enjoyed his first plane ride and trip to India. We went from Atlanta, to London, then Dubai, and finally Trivandrum. When we first got on the flight we were scared on how Jacob will react. From blessings from God, we had no issues with Jacob. He loved the plane ride and the trip. We got to Kerala on Saturday early morning. Everyone was very eager to see Jacob. The next day I had the great blessing of conducting the "puthan qurbana" at my home church St. Mary's - Thatta. The following Sunday I had the opportunity again to conduct qurbana and also the Pentecost service at my home church. I was fortuante to take part in an anchinmel Qurbana at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Manarcard. Also I was the first priest to offer Holy Qurbana at our newly consecrated St. George church in Thumpamon. We were fortunate to take Jacob to several churches during our visit including: St. Mary's at Thatta, Parumala, Manarcard, Manjinakara, St. Mary's Cathedral at Pathanamthitta, Michael Mor Dionysius Dayro at Adoor and St. George at Thumpamon. He quickly became familiar with the Saint's pictures. With only 2 weeks we did not have a lot of time to spend / visit with family. We were able to host a Kulathinkarote kudumba prayer on Sunday May 20th. At this prayer we were able to see almost all of the Kulathinkarote family members. We had decided before we left Atlanta that on this trip with Jacob we would not do the house to house family visit. We were extremely worried about how Jacob would handle the new environment but he really enjoyed himself. He loved being spoiled by his uncles, aunts grandparents and great grandparents. On the way back we stopped in Dubai for 2 days. We got to visit with family there. We had a chance to do some siteseeing. It was very hot though. All in all, the trip was a success and Jacob had fun!April 8, 2007 - Jacob's First Easter
Jacob experienced his first Holy Week. We spent a couple of days in Winder for evening prayer and the rest in Charlotte. Fortunately Jacob behaved for the most part. Easter was great. We broke the lent with a grand feast in Charlotte.March 17, 2007 - Appachan and Ammachi leaves for India
Today we went to say bye to Appachan and Ammachi as they leave for India. Although we are sad to see them leave we know that Appachan would like to stay in his house in India. We will miss them and hopefully will get to visit them sometime this year.March 12, 2007 - Jacob's 9 month appointment
Today was Jacob's 9 month appointment. He escaped shots today but we were told by the nurse that they will make up for it on his one year check up. Dr. Penny said Jacob looks great. He is moving along on the growth chart and is doing well. He looks forward to seeing Jacob at a year old!February 03, 2007 - Jacob's first tooth
Hi Everyone! Guess what Janice & I saw in Jacob's mouth today? His first tooth! Jacob is almost eight months old. We can see a small tooth trying to come out on the bottom right. Jacob has been fighting a cold with runny nose for the past couple of weeks. We are thinking it's because he has been "teething" that he was not feeling well. We don't think there is enough out to take a picture but as soon as we can, we will make sure to take a picture so all of you can see it.January 17, 2007 - Joy & Biji visit Jacob
Joy & Biji arrived in Atlanta on Saturday, January 13th and was with us for Four days. They returned to New York on Tuesday, January 16th. Jacob had a blast with them.January 12, 2007 - Happy New Year!
Things have been real busy with us and a lot has happened since the last time I updated the website. I have updated the site somewhat for now and will continue to update and add pictures. What's new with Jacob you ask? Well he is now seven months old. He sits by himself and enjoys sitting on his high chair for eating. He recognizes people, especially mommy and daddy. When you put your hands out and call him, he responds by lifting his hands showing he wants you to take him. When Aruna comes in the morning, he knows daddy is leaving. He is not happy about it and starts to cry... but after a few minutes he is OK. When Janice & I get home in the evening he is excited to see us which is a rewarding sight after a long day's work. On a side note When Jacob was first born he used to sleep in the crib at night but when he started waking up three or four times during the night we moved him to our bed and he has been sleeping with us all this time. Last night for the first time we put him back in his crib but left the crib next to our bed. He was fuzzy and resisted a little in going to sleep but eventually he fell asleep. Our end desire is that he moves out of our room and into his own room, sleeping by himself. Janice was looking after him and to be honest I am not sure how she does it. He woke up at least two times in the middle of the night and both times she woke up, fed him and in one case changed his diapers and went back to sleep. She wakes up at 6 in the morning to go to work. Jacob is truly thankful to mommy since his daddy is passed out once he goes to sleep.January 1, 2007 - Jacob's First New Year - Happy New Year!
Due to our long road trip, we downplayed New Year's. We decided that sleep/rest was more important. We did pray as a family to close off 2006 and thank God almighty for all the blessings He has showered upon us during the year. About two minutes before midnight we awoke from our sleep (we heard the neighbors firecrackers) prayed together and had a piece of sweet leddu (bring about sweetness in the New Year). We hope that God will continue to bless us during 2007. Jacob, Janice & I wish all our friends & family a Happy, Blessed New Year!December 25, 2006 - Jacob's First Christmas.
We went to St. Peter's & St. Paul's church Christmas morning, sang Christmas carols, and had the family get together for dinner at Papa & Mommy's house. Jacob got the most gifts this Christmas (Janice and I were a little jealous that Jacob stole the spotlight...it's ok...we're learning to adjust...hahaha). Family and friends spoiled Jacob this year. He loves wearing his new outfits and playing with his new toys. Watching his excitement is our gift. Thanks for all the wonderful presents. One day Jacob will be able to thank you himself.December 20 - 30, 2006 - Jacob's Surprise Visit to New York
We left here on Wednesday, December 20th and drove more then half way. For the night we stopped at a Holiday Inn and rested. Thursday Morning we got up and drove the rest and was at Papa & Mommies by 3 PM. We rang the bell but no one answered. Mommy had a half day at work and should be home... so we decided to call. Sure enough mommy picks up the phone. I asked her to confirm the address and then asked her to open the door. She is confused and not sure what to do so she asks which door to which I answer your houses front door. A minute later she comes and opens the door... SURPRISE! Mommy wanted to call papa and tell him we were home. We said NO! So, papa went to the motor vehicle office to get the address changed, went grocery shopping and then came home. When he came home we had Janice and Jacob stand in front of the door so when he opened the door he would say them. You should of seen the expression of papa's face. Kodak moment for sure. We spent a good ten days in New York. For the most part we just rested at home.December 11, 2006 - Jacob's 6 month checkup
Although we had our pep talk, I think Jacob has come to the age of understanding why we visit the doctor. For everyone that knows Jacob, it's hard to make him upset or cry. Typically he's in a great mood and is always happy. Of course as soon as we got in the exam room he started to cry. Neither Janice nor I could comfort him. He was just upset all around. He kept giving us those looks like "why are you doing this to me" It was the longest 30 minutes that's for sure. Thankfully we got through it. Don't want to think about it too much. They tell us that at the 9 month visit there are no shots... YIPPY!!!November 23, 2006 - Jacob's First Thanksgiving
Jacob got his first taste of turkey... ok maybe he didn't have the turkey but he took a good look at the bird and thought once again they tell me maybe next year. He was able to enjoy a little bit of fresh sweet potato from both his maternal grandparent's house and his great grandparent's house. (2 turkeys in 1 day- Lucky little man)November 6 - 11, 2006 - Daddy goes to Houston for Team Meeting
I had to head out for another business trip and leave Janice and Jacob on their own. I spoke to Jacob almost every night and he continued to be a good boy for mommy. While visiting NASA I was able to pick up a future astronaut onesie and some goodies for him. I got him plenty of gifts from Houston (I think the count was up to 14). I was able to find a book fair and got him plenty of books for his library. We want Jacob to be an avid reader. Hopefully our reading to him will instill this practice. I think mommy was a little jealous that Jacob got all the gifts...October 28, 2006 - Jacob's first cold
Jacob woke up with the sniffles. Jacob said Janice and I overreacted and that he was fine. Of course he's the boss. We were a little worried since we had never dealt with a sick baby. He actually did a pretty good job. Jacob smiled through it and with his saline drops and cool mist humidifier we got through it just fine. He was right we did worry for no reason. I guess he knows what he's talking about.October 21-30, 2006 - Jacob's road trip to see his Grandparents
We began our trip by stopping in Charlotte overnight. We had service there and headed on up the coast. Jacob was busy playing with mommy. She packed plenty of toys, books, and music to keep them occupied. We stopped in Philly and visited with Ancy's family and Mohan Uncle then headed on up to our final destination Jacob's grandparents house. Jacob had a few days to spend quality time with the family. Uncle Joy and Biji Chechy came to visit. He enjoyed seeing the extended family also.October 14, 2006 - Jacob's first taste of solid food
We started Jacob on Gerber rice cereal. We're told to continue the same cereal for 3-5 days or until we finish the box depending on how he does. His expression was priceless. Imagine going from a liquid diet for 4 months then all of a sudden tasting food with a new taste and texture. Unfortunately we didn't have the camera's rolling.
(Oatmeal - October 21, 2006 Barley - November 4, 2006)October 11, 2006 - Jacob's 4 month appointment
We're slowly getting in to the routine of these appointments and preparing ourselves better for the immunizations. The nurse weighed him, took his length, and measured the circumference of his head. All great on the growth chart. Of course Dr. Penny came in and gave him a thorough check up. Luckily he was fine with Dr. Penny. He told us Jacob could start solids which meant our little one was growing to the next stage. After Dr. Penny gave us the thumbs up, it was time for the shots. Jacob and I had a pep talk the night before (we have those frequently). I reminded him what a strong young baby he is and of course he got through it with a little cry. Luckily he didn't have complications and was not too fussy afterwards. Next visit - 6 months... ahhhhSeptember 23, 2006 - Jacob's First Church Picnic
Although Jacob's competitive spirit was on a high today, he was the only one in his age group so wasn't able to participate in the games. We kept assuring him that next year would be better. It was the first time Jacob spent an extensive time outside. He did great. He was lounging in his bouncer and of course all the uncles, aunties, and kids at church gave him the attention he loves. During lunch, we caught him taking a taste of grandpa's bbq pork. The highlight of the day was watching daddy win first place in the Lemon and Spoon Race. He was a so proud.September 18 - 22, 2006 - Daddy's first trip away from Jacob - Work: Arizona
Fortunately Jacob and I had a pep talk about giving mommy an easy time while I was away. According to mom, Jacob was a pleasant baby. She had some trouble being the only one at home with him after work but luckily we got through the week ok. Boy was I glad to see Jacob when I got back. It felt like I had been gone forever. Jacob told me secretly that it was fun being with mom but he missed my company. Of course I am more fun to play with. Shhhh don't tell Janice...September 9, 2006 - Jacob's Baptism
It was a very special day for Jacob. We had friends and family from all over attending this blessed event. The day began with "Mooninmel Qurbana" with Thirumeni as the Chief celebrant and Very Rev. Fr. Joseph C. Joseph (Jacob's maternal grandfather) and I co-assisting. During the baptism, Jacob calmly rested in the hands of Papa, his Godfather, and smiled during the entire thing ceremony. He seemed genuinely content and even enjoyed the water and the anointing of the oil. He even tried to grab Thirumeni's beard at one point. I was able to administer the “First” Holy Communion and dad was able to bring Jacob in to the altar. Our hope is with religion playing an important part of our lives that Jacob, too, will decide to serve the Lord to the best of his ability.August 27, 2006 - Jacob's first road trip
At 12 weeks we decided to take Jacob to Charlotte for the first time. He did very well on the ride up. We played music for him and had his toys and books in the car. He pretty much ate and slept the whole way. He loved the attention he received from the kids in Charlotte. He was full of smiles when he saw his new friends.08-10-06 - Another month has passed us
Jacob is now two months old. He had the doctor's visit today. For the most part things went well. He is growing taller and gaining weight. The doctor came in and said everything looked well. Then the nurse came in with 3 injections. I think Janice started crying just seeing the needles... hehe BUT Jacob was strong. One after the other, he got three shots, 2 on the right and one of the left leg. The doctor's office gave us some Tylenol to get him through the 48 hours of pain and fussiness. Janice started back at work this week. I think she is sad she can not be with Jacob but she is staying strong. On her first day back, some how, Jacob was able to use my credit card and send mommy some flowers saying not to worry about him and that he loves her. WOW momma's boy already. We have a nice lady coming to look after Jacob while we are at work. Her name is Aruna and she is a God sent. We were really worried as what we will do with Jacob. We were not sure how daycare would be at this young age. Aruna lives about 15 miles away but with traffic it takes an hour to get to our house (poor Aruna). She has been in the USA for over 20 years and has three grown children. Jacob has taken to her very well. Jacob's uncle Joel got married this past weekend. Jacob got all dressed up in a tux and attended the wedding, reception and the family gatherings. Jacob got to meet a lot of his extended family. His appachen, ammachi, Biji chechy and uncle Joy from New York visited and spent time with him. We welcome Ancy aunty to the family. Click here to see pictures from Joel & Ancy's Wedding! Jacob's next doctor's appointment is in two months. He will get another round of shots then.07-10-06 I can not believe it...
It has been one month since Jacob was born. WOW how fast time goes. Next thing I know, he will want to drive and I truly will be an "old goat". We had to take Jacob for his one with check up today. Dr. Penny said everything looked great. No shots today but he said the next visit, at two months, Jacob will get three shots. He has forewarned us to have Tylenol ready. I am already dreading the two month visit.07-07-06 Today we celebrated the 28th of Jacob.
This is a South Indian tradition where the families get together and tie a black string around Jacob's waist, to ward the evil eye and to celebrate the birth of the newborn. Then he is adorned with gold including gold chain on his waist, gold chains around the neck, bracelets, etc. From what I understand, in India, since there are no insurance plans, pregnancy and birth is a costly event. The reason to celebrate this event is to mainly help out the parents financially.07-01-06 Today I celebrate my Birthday...
and we have a new addition to celebrate with. Jacob is three weeks old. Some how he was able to go to Publix and order a surprise birthday cake. Oh you know what else? He got me a balloon that said "Happy Birthday, you old goat!" Hey Hey Hey... I AM STILL in my 20's .06-10-2006
Fr. Bijo & Janice Mathew announce the arrival ofJacob Kulathinkarote Mathew
Born Saturday, June 10, 2006
At 3:35 AM. 6 Pounds 19 InchesBoth mom and baby are doing well. We hope to be back home on Monday. We request that you please remember us in your prayers! What does babies middle name mean? -- Back home in Kerala, India, each house or family is known by a name. Our house name is Kulathinkarote. It means By the side of a pond. The house literally sits next to a pond so the name makes sense. Kulathinkarote. By giving this as the middle name, we hope Jacob remembers his culture and family.
